Measured, not claimed.

Every number here comes from the two Durham University studies. Nothing on this page is extrapolated from anecdote.

After training, echoes activated primary visual cortex in both blind and sighted participants. The claim that you see with your brain rather than your eyes is the one part of the folklore that imaging actually supports.

Ten weeks, two sessions a week.

Session numbers match the study's twenty. Each week has a gate. You do not advance on time served, you advance on hitting the gate.

WEEK 01 / SESSIONS 1-2

Build the click

Palatal click production. Presence versus absence of a large flat panel. Nothing else.

GateConsistent click, reliable panel detection at 1 m
WEEK 02 / SESSIONS 3-4

Size opens

Size discrimination begins at 33 cm. Reference disk against the comparison set.

GateBeat chance on size
WEEK 03 / SESSIONS 5-6

Orientation opens

The 80 x 20 cm board at four angles. Both drills now run every session.

GateBeat chance on orientation. The study hit this at session 2.
WEEK 04 / SESSIONS 7-8

First distance step

Move the disks back, but only if the 90% gate held across two sessions.

GateSize accuracy trending toward 65%
WEEK 05 / SESSIONS 9-10

Off the bench

Halfway. Add 20 to 30 minutes of free indoor exploration to every session.

GateRead a doorway against a wall while walking
WEEK 06 / SESSIONS 11-12

Real rooms

Corners, alcoves, open versus closed doors. Surfaces that are not flat panels.

GateFind an opening without touching it
WEEK 07 / SESSIONS 13-14

Outdoors

Parked cars, trees, hedges, building faces. Open air changes everything about the return.

GateTrack a building line while walking beside it
WEEK 08 / SESSIONS 15-16

Corridor shapes

T intersections, U bends, Z zig-zags. Spotter required, no exceptions.

GateComplete a T with no wall contact
WEEK 09 / SESSIONS 17-18

Unfamiliar ground

Spaces you have never trained in. This is where room memory gets stripped out.

GatePerformance holds in a new room
WEEK 10 / SESSIONS 19-20

Transfer test

Untrained environment, full protocol, silent controls included. The honest measurement.

GateWhere you actually are

The session.

Every parameter below is the study's, not invented. Run all three drills in this order.

What to expect, and when

The curve is front-loaded.

Solid lines are the study's measured accuracy. The dashed line is a realistic lighter-dose projection, because this program runs roughly half the study's hours.

Size discrimination, measured Orientation, measured Your projected pace at half the study's hours
S2
Orientation beats chance. First honest signal anything is happening.
S3-6
Steepest gains. Most of the total improvement lands here.
S10
Roughly two thirds of the way to the final numbers.
S14-20
Accuracy slows, transfer starts. It begins working in untrained places.

The study dose was 40 to 60 supervised hours. This program is 2 sessions a week plus a daily 10 minute drill. Shift every expectation right by 30 to 50%. The curve still arrives. It arrives later.

The test that separates this from the fake version.

Blindfold reading demonstrations collapse under controls because trainees learn to peek down the nose gap. Run these five and your results mean something.

01

Blackout mask, always

Contoured, no nose gap. Test it in a lit room by looking down. If you can see your own feet, the mask has already failed.

02

The helper randomizes

You never know the trial order. If you set up your own trial, it does not count toward anything.

03

Log every miss

Selective logging is self-deception with extra steps. The misses are the data.

04

Run the silent control

Five trials per session where you make no click at all. Score above chance on those and something other than echo is leaking. Stop and find it. This is the test the blindfold schools never run.

05

Change rooms

Learning one room's quirks is memory, not echolocation. Rotate spaces or you will fool yourself for ten weeks.

06

Spotter on every navigation run

Indoors before outdoors. Never near traffic, water, stairs, or drop-offs. This supplements a cane and sight. It replaces neither.

Everything you need.

Foam board, a tape measure, a blackout mask, and someone willing to hold up disks for half an hour.

Why the light-in-the-mask method is not in this course.

The video that started this described two schools. One taught children to imagine light inside the blindfold. The other taught sensitivity to vibration. Only the second one survives contact with a controlled test, and it has a real name.

  • The claimChildren read text and identify objects through a blindfold after training.
  • The findingClassified as pseudoscience. Under controls that close the nose gap, the ability disappears.
  • The mechanismTrainees learn to peek downward. No teacher has to be dishonest for this to happen.
  • What survivesThe vibration branch. It is echolocation, and it has imaging, protocols, and a 10 week curve.
  • What was rightYou see with your brain, not your eyes. Visual cortex activates on echoes. Correct premise, wrong method.
